Massive Voodoo Astronaut - Beyond imagination
Back in 2020 I was readingvalot on massive voodoo! It's such a great source of inspiration, tutorials and advises.
And then the famous MV Astronaut Challenge has been posted.
The astronaut - sold via Mr Lee's Minis had to be part of the piece. That's all.
As I love challenges, they motivate a lot, but that every entry took part in a raffle of various stuff motivated even more. So I could win something without even being competitive.
Self Limitation
The astronaut started a great wave of inspiration all over the community. It was even not easy to get a copy due to the high demand. For whatever reason - not for me. I got my copy fast and was totally uninspired.
In retrospective, the reason was self limitation.
I never did anything beside mini painting + a little base building. Da Red gobbo with the rocket was the highest standard ever in base building. How should I implement now all the ideas in mind?
That's why I dropped all ideas as soon as they popped up without even spending a second thought.
A lesson that can only be learned by a thorough retrospective - and man I wanted to kick myself when the gallery had been released and people implemented mind blasting ideas. All because they didn't limit their creativity.
Creative Process
The idea came up from the video game micro machines. There was a setting where vehicles drive across the breakfast table and avoid colorful froot loops as obstacles.
So the astronaut should be setup on an asteroid in a fruit loop comet storm.
I planned a backdrop since there were tons of “airbrush aerospace backround” tutorials and I definitely wanted to try my new tool.
Implement the idea
Sounds easy but I was not in the mood of creativity. I didn't have an idea how to create little froot loops and took kittylitter.
The kitty litter is very fragile and Broke when trying to add a pin for glueing. Also the pins looked weird. So in the end, I decided to change the concept and go for a stranded astronaut on asteroid who grasps for a fancy looking glowing space thing.
The airbrushing was fun - just some random template, blue to red colors, and go for it. Unfortunately there are No backdrop WIPs - I’m afraid to stop in the middle of a spray session and clog the gun.
Now for the painting I had new paints - the initial Kimera set that was the hot *** at that time. And the red - Well the most vibrant I’ve ever seen.
I pushed myself to paint reflections in the visor and some glow effect but in total it wasn’t more than a evening effort.
Retrospective
No effort - Suppressed creativity but I had to submit cause I committed to it.
And finally, I really won something - a old set of Rackham dwarfs in a raffle. As everything happens for a reason - a fellow painter McHotdoc, who collects Rackham minis, exactly missed those minis in his collection.
All’s well that ends well.
