Brief: Goblin in Love

Birthday gift - Goblin in Love

This bust was a birthday present from my son - to be honest, I ordered a whole set of minis in the past - and he chose which to give as present and hid it in his closet.

Sounds weird but kids are so happy when handing over a “grown up present” instead of a child's painting.

The mini is from Michael Kontraros from 2016.

Quite an old style of cast obviously the recent years did huge quality improvements but the overall Figur is so cool. It's a homage on a MTG card artwork “Squee, goblin Nabob” painted by Greg Staples.

The happy and calm mood of the goblins face is superb.

Is there a plan?

For the painting, I didn't follow a specific vision. It was just about cleaning up the backlog and busts are in the majority.

But I had planned to improve on painting faces - especially bringing color in. Didn’t many bust till that day and I never have been happy, cause they looked like wax figures.

But in majority, it should be a fun piece.

So it started with a brave wet blending of a rather desaturated yellow green and a burnt umber in the shadows.

Once this was set I started with variations on the face. The ears got a desaturated brown touch as well as cheekbones and nose. The shadows were intensives by more brown.

That was already a way more interesting face than the ones I've done in the past and bravery wen’t a little too high with the next step (-;

He-Man is dead

Whatever hit my brain, but I chose a artificial blond for the furry, which visually destroyed everything. It looked as if the goblin had killed He-Man and put his sculpt over the shoulder.

Next try - a fox tail pattern. But that has been too much brown for my taste.

Final touches

So for the final version I switch suit and fur color, although I'm still not 100% happy.

I added some more red glazes on the nose and grey on the chin for an unshaved finish.

I don’t think that more that 10 hours were invested but I’ve been quite happy with the face colour and that has been the main mission.
