Gaming: Necrons the path to display painting
The way to 40k
I cleaned up some of my old gaming minis to make some room, which means - selling. Time to let the Necrons go - although they have quite a bit of history in my hobby life.
Back in the 2000s I played a lot of Warhammer Fantasy. Someday some of my playgroup friends moved to 40k and I also met a guy at school that tried to drag me into it. But I always denied and said: “Only if GW reveals a true Necron fraction, I’ll start 40k”.
Back then, there existed 4 Necron models and some white dwarf article.
Well in 2002 it became true. Necron s became a full fraction with tons of models and a novum: “green translucent plastic rods” as their energy weapons.
So I bought in, and soon earned my first money - so that’s where it went.
The models were painted silver and red - a dry brushed basecoat. Unfortunately I never took any pictures before I sold them ~2009
The way to 40k … again
Probably the Necrons are one of the reasons why I'm into painting now.
In 2016, a friend from my old wargaming group moved back to my town, and he was still knee deep into 40k. Long story short - he ignited the fire again.
And why do I sell again? I’m still into wargaming, but more on the skirmish side. I have nowadays three small armies for 40k without really playing. Style-wise the Necron are just not my favorite anymore. They shifted from a Terminator style towards a tomb king style, which I don't like that much.
Enough bla bla - about the models and their history:
Necron Warriors
Everything started with the warriors. In my hobby return, I wanted to invest very low painting effort and planned a Terminator style - silver ( storm host silver + wash + drybrush) with red light effects.
It turned out that a child red light effect is very very hard to achieve. Mix in white means it will get pink. Mix in yellow and it will be orange.
I’ve tried 3 versions, even a green one, but stick with the pink - red because - will that's how the terminators were.
Scarabs
Next were the scarabs and here I created some very first touches of Diorama building. Instead of the files flight stands I’ve put them on the ground and c added some stones, skeletons or abandoned motor bikes. I still remember that I had massive joy on these little bases.
Color wise I saw that I’d need a third color beside silver red. The scarabs were Innice test field and finally I chose a dark green - merry Christmas Theme (-;
Immortals
For other necrons I experimented with some completely new things. The Immortals should have a kind of mystic metallic look on the shoulder pad - which comes a bit close to the NMM idea. I have mi clue anymore how this idea came up and nowadays I think that I wanted a bit too much
Triarch Stalker
A highlight has been the triarch stalker. It has been one of my most beloved models anyway and I set him on a base, just cause I liked to have a clear footprint.
Now the base was massive. Really one of the biggest the game uses. And I was a bit nervous to fill that huge space.
But quite easily a story was found and everything was in flow: This big beast is spider like and can easily move through any terrain - so it should stand in the middle of an outpost that no other vehicle could reach. And although it is secured by tanks stops, barbed wire and rubble the stalker triumphs above the conquered crates.
Another hint that Diorama building could a be a thing in the future.
The tank barriers where made from sprues, I think the idea came from an Uncle Atom video. Those should have been treated way rougher as the sprie origin is obviously visible (-;
Lesson Learned
From there on, the remaining ones aren't that spectacular process wise. The only thing I really noticed is about motivation.
The scarabs and their bases or the stalker were so much fun, that I’ve set up the painting desk every evening.
But when it came to the other models, there was no real flow. Whenever two to three models of a squad were done, the mojo was lost. When I did a second run on army painting with the Admech, the same issue came up again and I decided to not paint armies again.
So here are the remaining models painted between 2016 and 2018
