Build: The Fisher King

SMC2023 raffle win

At AMC 2023 my painting friend, @romanozee pushed us all to join the smc raffle.

Simple thing - you spend a euro for a ticket - which wins a donated mini - or not.

Well, I’ve been the lucky one in the group and won 3 pieces - one of which is the Fisher man.I didn't know that mini and the boxart looked quite old - not as polished as the ones nowadays.

But cause Im in love about sea themed minis, I’ve googled who created it and found an article on massive voodoo ( https://massivevoodoo.blogspot.com/2019/04/saro-the-ferryman.html?m=1 ). So the quite known sculpter Daniele “Found” Trovato created it as exclusive mini for the verbania model show 2019 in Italy.

Boxart fisher

The model seemed to have had some travels. The box had a few dents and some parts of the jacket were broken. But that is a chance to improve my milliput skills.

The model nicely fixed, actionism entered the stage: I had a brief idea of strong sundown light from the side so the fisherman was glued on a wooden plinth and primed. But somehow it missed personality.

Fisher first build

So I looked thoroughly at the mini to identify what would be a way to personalize it with paint or some little build without conflicting with the intention of the sculpter.

What the mini tells, the mini tells

So here are my observations that must be respected:

His gaze appears very satisfied or enjoying. It seems the fish is freshly caught and probably the cause of his mood and the pipe is his reward - an indication of the hard work being done.

He wears a leather coat that floats a bit in the wind and the wind is also visible on the beard. Thus it seems to be colder, definitely an outdoor scene. And since the floor is wooden, I assume a ship or pier.

That's something to work with. I loved the idea with the pier: The old fisher stands here after successful work, enjoying the sundown with a last pipe before going home to the family while gazing onto the sea - face into the wind.

Everyone needs a pier

Well then, I need a pier.

And this means, undo the glueing - Who starts without a vision has to invest extra work fixing this. And the super glue + wood + resin combo, created a tough bond. Well, what needs to be removed, has to be removed even of it’s a Puzzle afterwards.

And that's what it has been.

Building the pier from wood

The wooden floor could be reused but needed extensions.

So, what else makes pier? Sure: Water. And that means the whole thing need to be lifted and the water has to be modeled somehow.

The pier ”stamps” where cut from wood. I think it's from the grapes in the garden.

Pier stamps from real wood

The resin pier was puzzled and extended by ice cream sticks.

Pier build from cecream sticks

The water was created from an acrylic paste. Painting vise, I had a plan. A sundown on the sea. With acrylic water effects there is not much possibility to indicate this scenery. Thus I chose to paint it.

Acrylic water effects

The acrylic paste was very thick and could be shaped easily with the sculpting tools.

The mini itself has a directional wind indicated in the beard and this directional dynamic should be carried over to the waves too.

Such observations of details in the mini are very important to me and should have been done before any plinth gluing (-:

And after priming it looked quite good - unfortunately, when the pier is attached, most of the waves are hidden, but sufficiently visible to transfer the idea.

Primed base

And that was a state to be happy with. Well then - Load the brushes.
