Paint: Dragon Girl

Beyond imagination and a first bust

Remember that tiny astronaut from the massive voodoo challenge from the very first posts?

These tiny Rockstars had to be ordered in the UK at MrLee’s minis. To Germany that was anyway quite some shipping cost, and I couldn't justify that price for a few tiny astronauts.

So that's why I ordered my first bust. It's not that I’m a massive Game of Thrones fan nor did I fall In love with that mini. But it was reasonably cheap at ~25€. And so I came to my first bust.

The bust is sculpted by Stavros Zouliatis ( Stravos.Sculpts ).

Paint without miniature references

First thing I noticed on this piece: It's very hard to paint something where you don’t find any painted version of. I had that with the Gaslands car, but a car is intuitive and easy to find inspiration for, but for me a sculpted mini was not at that time.

Transferring inspiration from different sources to a piece is something to learn by doing.

I searched for furr, hair, skin - but mostly in the realm of miniatures and that was very limiting.
For the dragon head and oriented on the dragon “Draco” from the movie Dragonheart and searched similar painted minis for reference. Weird, cause just watching the movie again would be all that’s needed for inspiration.

First colors on the dragon head

For the girl, I intended to avoid blonde hair and not head in the Game of Thrones direction. So it became a kind of chestnut.

Skintone recipies

That time I still was quite stuck on recipes and used a fixed choice of skin colors. I think suggested by Squidmar . Although he said “You don’t have to use exactly these colors”, I received the message: “Use exactly these colors for skin”.

They work fine, no question and the face is OK probably would be even better at 32mm scale, but on a bust it misses a lot of “life”. I feel it’s quite flat and artificial due to the lack of tonal variations and also the eyes seem a bit boss-eyed.

It's not a piece that I’m very proud of nowadays, but it is a piece of my painting history for the “first bust” category.
