Challenge what you don't like
That project was again a GMPC Painting Challenge “Paint an Infitiy Tag”.
Initially I didn’t intend to take part. Infinity is just not my style of miniatures and it is also a big metal chunk - a challenge to build and not chip while painting. But just the good spirit of the GMPC server that time and the people there motivated me to give it a try.
Heavy Metal at it's best
After cleaning and glueing that Massive beast of metal, I created a little base. Nothing fancy - I’ve been in love with cork and built a small crater to indicate a battle scene.
Narrative is Inspiration
According to the storyline for this Combined Army “EI TAG Avatar”, he - or it? - is a stealth fighter. That instantly raised the pictures of the predator movies to my mind. And that should be reflected in the painting.
Some parts intended to be very very dulled down, other parts metallic. And as indication that it leaves or enters stealth mode, the two effects were separated by a lighting effect.
That was the plan, but what color to use? I tried some yellow steel, blue, orange and for the stealth part grey to brown. Looked a bit fancy all at once but I just like more to try on a mini instead of an editing SW.
The skin or flesh on the boxart is very shiny red - that’s what I aimed for and since I got my first flour paint set, I gave them a chance to shine. And that’s how I learned the hard way that flours won’t cover - a massive punch when mixed in, but took a lot of layers to accept that (-:
I received a second place which made me quite happy but also raised the feeling that it might be time to stop taking part in the GMPC challenges and let other people enter the stage.
Not that I’m the super hero painter or there was anything to win besides the community fame, but I placed for the 3rd time in a row back then. I feared that people would say “I don’t take part anymore cause always the same people win”. And a good community spirit of the GMPC was the most important thing.
