Concept: Objects in the Bathroom Mirror

What the heck to do with a Mirror?

The project was initiated by Roman Lappats patreon challenge “Something with a mirror”.

And I was keen on using a real one. Sounds easy, but it really isn’t. A mirror contradicts the main aspects of our hobby: control light and shadow via colour.

Ideas Ideas Ideas

While brainstorming some Ideas came up which were mostly rejected due to an impossible implementation.

  • Add mirrors to ground or bottom of a scene to reflect the sky like sparkling stars or waves.
    • But then I could even paint that stuff repeated instead of using a mirror.
  • Infinity mirror
    • requires LEDs, proper mirrors, space. I’m not ready for that
  • Self in the mirror + a miniature
    • Imagine a mirror as background with some minis that are maybe hicking, so that they are hicking on your head if you look into it. I licked that a lot, but couldn’t find a way to properly photograph that.
  • The mirror showing something that is hidden in certain perspectives or look around a corner
    • that could be photographed and easily baked into a story!

Idea found - Planning started

Ok with idea number 4 set, my most beloved mind game started:

Where do mirrors appear?

  • Bathrooms
  • Dressing rooms
  • Bedrooms
  • Wardrobes

What “hidden” piece shall the mirror enable to see?

  • A kid
  • a pet
  • treasure
  • monster
  • a lover

What mirrors are available on the market

  • Foils
  • Mirror paint
  • Mirror tiles

Scribble me

That’s the brief summary of the brainstorming. While scribbling a sketch on my phone, I got keen on the bathroom idea. First, it allows to keep the scene small and secondly, I recently bought a neat set of Bathroom basing bits from Zabavka workshop via Kickstarter.

Scribble topview of a mirror and miniatures

That sketch scribble was super helpful to get the concept settled: 2 view points for the diorama, each showing a different perspective and a glimpse to the hidden part via a mirror.

Let’s grab the Cork, bluetac and dummies.

Levels of skething

Sketch with kork and dummyfigures left side

The first dummy ist hilarious - I didn’t have any mirrors and every little touch crushed the scene cause BlueTac and Cork have an ambivalent relationship. The BlueTac doesn’t stick well, but is also nearly impossible to remove from the little recesses.

Well - not nice, but the mirrors might work, and with a 6x6 cm size, I’m in my comfort zone.

A few days later my mirror tiles arrived. What a deal - Now I sit on 198  remaining mirror tiles for just 10€…

Sketch with stacked mirrors

Sketch with single mirror

The Mirror sketching was a pain in the …. The angle of Minis and mirror had to fit but the BlueTac was so wobbly that in 1 of 20 trials the stuff was sturdy enough to grab a photo.

But the angle works Ok - the height was settled and the decision to go with a single mirror. 2 mirrors stacked would make a way too massive bathroom mirror in that scale.

Now to the minis.

I found a perfect Zombie in my inspirational boxes. It’s from Warlord games “Project Z” Zombie horde - an amazing box with zombies for all life situations.

And he set the scene!

A Hospital!

Finding a proper match for an existing mini is a real challenge - Especially when you search a mini without weapons, muscles or war pose. I took me 2 or 3 days intense googling until I found the little girl from Vaultz miniatures.

From there on the project wen’t step by step into construction, but that’s another post.
