The Scope
Again a challenge - yeah, those trigger my inspiration to try something different.
If I remember right, that was my second ever bust painted. The challenge didn’t have any restrictions - tho only one was to choose from 4 different busts by White Werewolf Tavern.
I liked this Wizard "Zondar Valis" alot and he looked a bit like the Emperor Ming of the Flash Gordon movie from 1980.
And that was also the target to achieve:
- A lot of golden trims
- Red Silk like fabrics
- Grumpy face
Basic layouting
I did start with a light reference from the left side - lit by an LED on black primer that has a satin finish.
Well then. let’s go. Brief sketches of the light placement with some trials on the right finish of the clothes. For the satin I stippled from a wine red and brightened with white - which became very pink. It took at least another year until I resolved the mysterium of brightening red.
But at least I did some trials on paper sheets. Back in those days I never attended any workshop or learned about painting more thoroughly.
Mixing was limited to add black or white to premixed colours. And that was the main issue blocking the progress.
And since it didn’t really turn out, I glazed it back and only a slight highlight remained.
And then the gold rims… I really tried to follow the light reference and painting from a screen reference is very exhausting. But those turned out quite good colour wise.
And last major step that wasn’t spoilered yet (-: -
A magic glow!
The Wizard’s pose with the stretched two fingers on the right hand imposes that something is happening there. For me it felt like he’s doing something with a slight gesture so that it’s not really noticed. Or like a super power master wizard - When he moves just two fingers, there might appear a super magic power blast.
Stipple stipple stipple … and there was sparkling light. Hmm, red on red ist not a great choice. But that came from the Flash gordon reference where Empereor Ming has a red lighting magic ring.
Ok - time to break the ref.
My friend Nekropainter took a pic and did some digital drawing. Everything darker omn the right and blue as glow. Hell yeah!
Tried to get there with some glazes - but no, the darkening on such big surfaces got very patchy and it was time to reset the whole right part: The face, the clothes, the glow. But it was worth the reset.
The glow was just some purple and white - with the rimlight over the fingers it worked very well. The front gold was added again - just a bit, while everything hidden by the head remained dark.
The final version received even more blue on the magic effect. And that's it, a miniature that works very well on (underexposed) photos and black background (-:
