Roman Lappat Patreon Challenge
Not sure if I ever mentioned, but I’m member of the Roman Lappat Patreon and he posts quarterly Art improvement challenge. This time the topic is to create a miniature bust.
Challenge Accepted - Combat Arena Ransacked
As I participated in the last 2 challenges, I didn't plan to join this time as I haven’t been inspired.
Well then I cleaned up my boardgame stacks and stumbled over “Combat Arena - Lair of the beast” and opened the box.
I never played it, but the minis are amazing. While looking at them, I remembered the challenge and chose the Inquisitor.
There is an Amazon artwork of Taddeus, standing arrogantly with the book held high and the servo skull over the shoulder.
Well then - goodbye game, goodbye Taddeus lower half.
The plan for the Warhammer 40k inquisitor
- Cut in 2 part at his hip
- Remove the servo skull and add at the back
- Remove right arm - maybe repose
- Remove left arm and turn around book as of he is reading
and the last part will require some sculpting to rescue the cloak and I’m quite afraid About that.
First, let's cut.
I’ve even tried to remove the head and make it more looking up, but that didn’t work. Let's hope the scratches are not visible.
For the plinth I found an old yarn roll. Always valuable to store garbage.
FRANKENSTEIN
Now it's Frankenstein time! Blue Tag and check the poses.
I chose to leave the right arm. For a bust we have this freedom and otherwise it would look too overloaded for me.
The first items were glued ( scarf broke a few minutes later again ) and added a wire to rebuild the cloak
Sculpt it like a ... Real sculptor
First, I covered the frame with a bit of green stuff like an arm. Not beautiful, it will be covered later anyway.
And then a flat square is cut and shaped like mad. Took about 2 hours. The dryer the green stuff got the easier it could be shaped as it got stiffer. That's a lesson learned. After drying, I sanded with fine grid of K600 and cleaned some parts with a very sharp knife ( fresh blade).
Now let dry reglue the scarf and prime.
I'm happy with the shape but not with the surface. It is still rough and giddy.
Primer did quite a good job hiding it, but revealed some scratches nubs and non - drilled barrel that had to be fixed.
Half a gaming figure - I assume a quick paint job
