Backdrop experiments
Before I even started the miniature, I painted some backdrops. Ideas were gathered from google. You can find thousands of references of fisher towns, piers and sundowns at the sea.
The sum of all these pictures created a reference in mind. Based on that research, it’s time to grab a brush.
Sounds like a phrase but when it comes to backdrops it helps just to start with colors and basic shapes in mind. You can’t ruin anything - the only thing you invest is time - its a cheap piece of plastic and not an expensive mini. And moving colours around creates shapes, interesting transitions and suddenly a result. Well, not always.
My first try was not satisfying at all (-: But it was an evening of fun.
The colors missed the orange intensity of a real sundown. It was only present in the clouds but not in the surroundings. The yellow has been too cold and so, the overall feel was not warm enough.Turn the plastic around and try again (-; This time more orange, warm yellow and it suited my vision way better.
The fisher himself
Now the mini itself developed quite fast. I decided for a coat color, hat color, warm light from the front and cold from the rear. Colors on the palette, some wet blending and the rough shapes were layed down in an afternoon.
From there on I focused on a few details. It was a fun project and should stay on the painting desk only as long as the fun is there.
The eye was interesting, cause I read some tutorials not too long ago. Thus the knowledge should be used - painting including color transitions on the iris and reflection point. A matching viewing direction for the eyes was fortunately simple with one eye closed.
Work the eyes the miniature looked fine for me and I was close to putting it in the cabinet, but somehow it missed something. So I shot grayscale pic and tada! It missed focal points - hat too bright, jacket too, face too dark.
Now fixing this, required working on the individual parts. The jacket and the hat were glazed down whereas the face was highlighted further.
A few refinements, and that's it - The motivation was gone and the mini accepted as done. Quick, refreshing and a lot of fun.
